The regional office of the Department of Tourism (DOT) here is practically turning tourism into a convergence platform for human capital development.
DOT Regional Director Marie Venus Q. Tan is organizing a pioneering event that will generate jobs and livelihood in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), especially for this city’s ever-growing number of graduating students.
Dubbed 1st North Philippines (NorthPhil) Tourism Forum and Career Fair, this trailblazing event, according to Tan, will also boost commerce, attract foreign and local investments, and increase the region’s share in the country’s domestic and foreign visitor volume and tourism receipts.
Thus, Tan has gained the support of various sectors for the event as it is geared to make CAR more tourist friendly and tourism worthy than it has ever been.
Slated at Camp John Hay Trade and Cultural Center on October 16-18, the 1st NorthPhil Forum and Career Fair is being supported by the local governments, national government agencies, and the rest of the industry, including the transport, hospitality, travel, retail and all the other allied sectors.
The event is also evolving into a rallying point for regional unity as tourism worthiness proves to be the most visible and palpable manifestation of effective governance and multisectoral cooperation.
“Aptly, the event serves as a platform for multisectoral interaction among all industry sectors -- especially policy makers from both the government and the private sector -- for regional tourism performance review, benchmarking of best practices, and strategic development direction,” Tan said.
Constituting the 1st NorthPhil Forum and Career Fair are exhibits as a business component, and career talks from airlines, hotels and other industry players, lectures on tourism ethics and values, personality development sessions, and a forum on meetings, incentive travel, conferences, and events (MICE) as a potential income generator for CAR, particularly Baguio City.
The event includes trainings and presentations on current trends in tourism sustainability and technologies, new and emerging platforms of market engagement, job placements and recruitment services, and social and business functions, among others.
The exhibitors, all employers who will conduct hiring on the spot, are leisure and agri/ecotourism properties, airlines and air alliances, bed and breakfast accommodation facilities, bus lines, cruise and shipping firms, educational institutions and tour organizers, hotels and resorts, museums and historical attractions, restaurants, spa and wellness centers, themeparks and amusement hubs, tour and transport operators, travel and tourism associations, national and local government agencies and tourism boards, and other tourism-related service providers.
The expected visitors are the graduating students of tourism, hotel & restaurant management, advertising, mass communications, graphic design, information technology, human resource and business management, accountancy, marketing, international studies, engineering, and other technical and social sciences, including jobseekers wanting to have a career in tourism.

“All in all, the event is geared at making the people of North Philippines appreciate the value of tourism in improving the quality of life in the region and how they can contribute to the sustainable development of its physical and social environment,” Tan said.
“Specifically, this event will highlight tourism’s share in total national employment and GDP (gross domestic product) or economic growth,” Tan stressed.
In 2016, tourism accounted for 8.6 percent of the GDP and 12.8 percent of national employment.
