1st Mindanao Tourism Culture and Arts Congress kicks off in Dapitan

As if it was meant to be, the 1st Mindanao Tourism Culture and Arts Congress was an astounding success. Participated by Mindanao-wide tourism stakeholders including students, the congress was held at the premier resort, Dakak Park and Beach Resort in Dapitan City on March 11-13, 2010. Among the roster of discussants authority in their respective fields in clued the Philippine Department of Tourism Undersecretary for Tourism Services and Regional Offices, Atty. Oscar Palabyab who provided an overview on Philippine Tourism; the former Congressman Romeo G. Jalosjos whose topic focused on Dapitan tourism development and investment opportunities; and Integrated Performing Arts Guild Founder Dr. Steven P. C. Fernandez who spoke on the significance of Mindanao’s Culture and Arts in boosting tourism in Southern Philippines.

The congress, the first in Mindanao was a brainchild of Department of Tourism IX’s Regional Director, James Elridge C. Adraincem. It was conceived with an objective of convening various sectors in Mindanao towards a Great Cultural Awakening with hope of restoring waning indigenous cultures that have lured tourist to Mindanao. The project is not a means of pushing backwards civilizations but rather a means of stimulating pride on cultural legacies of Mindanao’s remarkable past.

Mindanao is the home of various ethnic minorities-an exotic mix of colors and culture- whose identities are on the brink of extinction due to advancement of civilization. Such identity is worth a keep should Mindanao continue to make a unique contribution the history of the world while sustaining an enduring attraction for tourist to unfold.
