Baler Surfing

Baler is the birthplace of surfing in the Philippines, first discovered and surfed by the production crew of 1979 Film Classic “Apocalypse Now”, who later left their board to the locals and Philippine Surf Culture was born. It is located roughly 6 hours drive from Manila. Accessible by public bus for tourists.

SEASONS

There is decent surfing all year round, the best waves coming from October until March, brought in by the north swell. The waves hit peak quality and size in December-January.

SURF SPOT INFORMATION

Sabang Beach
Sabang beach, usually provides small to medium size waves, best for beginner and novice surfing.

Cemento Beach
Cemento beach a strong right hand reef break, is the place to find the largest, cleanest, good quality waves in Baler, perfect for advanced surfers. Wetsuits are recommended. It hosts the local surf comps.

Charlie’s Point
Charlies Point (walking distance from Baler Town Proper) is the famous surf beach shot in “Apocalypse Now”, on regular swells, Charlie’s point provides a medium size and quality beach break. Waves can break both left and right, depending on the swell. Recommended for all surfers.

Lindy’s Point
A break accidentally created by the local government engineers, as they opened the mouth of Baler Bay to the town river, as a flood prevention exercise.

Another surf spot for advanced surfers, Lindy’s point provides tall, strong, sharp.
