Festivals

The Iligan City Fiesta is doubtless the most colorful yearly event in Iligan every September 29 honoring St. Michael, the Archangel. Here we find an expression of Christian piety that is rooted in a folk consciousness. It is difficult to shift historical facts from legend in the stories surrounding St. Michael as Iligan’s patron. The socio-religious-cultural phenomena one witnesses in the week long celebration captivate the imagination and issue of challenge to lose oneself in a collective subconscious, for a new yet strangely familiar experience.

COMEDIA – A miracle play that depicts Lucifer’s revolt against God, culminating the battle between good and bad angels (with the good led by St. Michael who was victorious).

PAGPAKANAUG – The ritual which transfers to the old black San Miguel figure from the main altar to the side altar – attended by the devotees whose numbers grow yearly.

SINULOG – A kind of frenzied dance mime simulating a heated battle against unseen adversaries and ending with the participants half-kneeling and crying out triumphantly “VIVA SEÑOR SAN MIGUEL”. One sees gaudily costumed people doing the sinulog dance during the procession.

YAWA-YAWA – This is the Iliganon name for San Miguel Comedia, circa 1890. It is a crude morality play in Cebuano and its theme is the triumph of San Miguel over Lucifer.

DIYANDI – A group of young girls in Bukidnon and Maranao costumes going from house to house to sing and dance for its occupants. The verses of the songs are in Bukidnon and Maranao dialects and express that though they live far away, they have come to pay homage to St. Michael and bring their respective offerings.
PANA-AD DANCE – Most visible and widespread phenomenon which refers to a promise (Pana-ad) made to St. Michael for favors granted. One sees gaudily costumed people doing the sinulog dance during the procession.
ARCHANGEL- Another more specialized form of the “Pana-ad” is the joining of archangels – those who dress up in warrior – angel costumes usually associated with St. Michael. They do not dance during the procession but march solemnly (usually as a solid phalanx (army) like warriors).

CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES

ADLAW SA ILIGAN, 16 June, Iligan was chartered as a city upon Congressman Mohammad Ali Dimaporo’s passage of House Bill No. 425 during the first session of the 2nd Philippine Congress on April 18, 1950, on its third reading. Finally, on June 16, 1950, President Elpidio Quirino signed into law Republic Act No. 525, the Charter of the new City of Iligan.
